From “Angry Black Man” Narrative to Civil Rights Posturing: My Experience with Amir Makled! As the victim in a criminal case, I watched attorney Amir I. Makled shift his story depending on who was listening. Three episodes stand out. 1. Preliminary exam: Painting me as the aggressor At the preliminary hearing before a white judge, Mr. Makled implied that I was the one spoiling for a fight. When I testified that the assailant called me “abed” (“slave” in Arabic), he quickly moved on and focused on how I reacted. In his closing, he argued that “two gentlemen can agree to fight,” likened the confrontation to a duel, and suggested the altercation was mutual. The racial insult and my trauma were almost dismissed; instead, I felt cast as the “angry Black man” who wanted to fight for his honor. 2. Bench trial: Denying the slur and playing civil rights advocate Months later, at the bench trial before a Black judge, Mr. Makled’s tone changed. He questioned me about the same slur, calling it “a very disgusting and derogatory word,” but then drilled me on whether I was sure it was said. He asked why I reacted the way I did and framed my testimony as my “contention”. In closing, he acknowledged I had alleged a racial slur but insisted there were no threats and portrayed the encounter as two men mutually choosing to fight. To me, it felt like he was using civil‑rights language to appear empathetic while still denying the reality of the slur to manage the judge’s reaction. 3. Truth prevails despite dishonest tactics Throughout the case, Mr. Makled’s tactics felt dishonest. During cross‑examination he held the personal protection order in his hand and forced me to read only select lines, refusing to let me examine it. He later chose not to enter the document into evidence. Yet in the end, none of his shifting narratives mattered. His client was convicted of aggravated assault, proving that the truth, despite his racial games and document omission games, could not be buried.
