I had an amazing experience with Ankita at this firm. She helped ease my mind and patiently answered every single one of my questions in a very difficult time in my life. She gave me great advice and has even since checked in on me. I would recommend her to anyone going through divorce, she really knows what she is doing! So grateful.
*Update: Next month, Dave will have been my lawyer for five years. I am confident adding the following to my initial review:
1. His purpose is not to drain your bank account.
- At my recent Judicial Settlement Conference, Judge Bean discussed with me the Cost-benefit Analysis of issues in my case. David had prepared me well then because it was a discussion he and I had already had! We knew which issues were worth going to trial for. Having that perspective going in saved me at least $30,000.
- There are many other situations when David presented to me all my options and was able to be thorough without running up my bill.
2. David works well with others. Reputation means a lot in the legal field, and David’s is top notch.
- Opposing party is on lawyer number four. David has taken each new attorney in stride and maintains a positive working relationship with each one.
- I've attended three mediations, and each time the mediator expresses his respect for David (No, these are not just mediators on the firm's short list.); As well as two judges.
3. David and all the firm's employees are kind and always display basic human civility and beyond.
- Opposing counsel filed a motion for sole custody the same day I was to attend a family memorial ceremony in a foreign country. David thoroughly and knowledgeably handled it until I could get back and was intentional to avoid disrupting my limited time with family.
- Given that family law can be emotionally charged, they have reached a great balance of stating truths while maintaining needed sensitivity.
- If I’m overcome with emotion (or need space, or debriefing, etc.) he has handled communicating with the judge or mediator for me, which I have been grateful for so that discussions can continue onward while I get a grip. (I am never railroaded, and my feelings/desires/opinions are always respected. As a mediator once told me, "He is protective of his clients.")
4. These lawyers and paralegals hold themselves to a high standard.
- They are very clear with deadlines (the courts' and their own), so they have enough time to review and make corrections.
- David continues to be knowledgeable about Utah's family laws and is current on Utah's recent family law recodification.
- I worked for a family law attorney at a different firm, and he, too, attested that this firm has never led me wrong.
- Because I was given sound advice, I made better choices when I handled different situations.
- They are thorough, precise, attentive, helpful, and understanding.
If you choose to retain Hanks and Peterson as your family law attorneys, I assure you, you will be well-represented.

Original review:
If you want a lawyer that will be honest with you then this is the place to go. I was completely unfamiliar about anything to do with family law, custody agreements and divorces. I asked my friend for a good and trustworthy attorney and she was right to refer me to Hanks and Peterson, specifically David Hanks.
David always gave me the truth. He explained things to me in full-context. For example, anything I thought about adding or taking away he let me know the full implications of such a decision and the ripple effects so I could be sure it was what I was intending.
As far as quality, David was thorough and always double-checked on my decree whenever he answered my questions about it. I am so grateful that I was referred to this firm for help with my high-conflict divorce. I have anxiety and he was patient in letting me know he/I/we had done everything we could so he wasn't worried and I didn't need to be either.
Mediation was extremely successful and I appreciated his insight throughout. He thankfully has seen many of these situations before and gave me excellent advise which I continue to heed.
He is a trustworthy lawyer who knows the law and sticks to it.

Rob Peterson is a rare kind of attorney—courageous, transparent, and unwavering. In my complex custody case involving my special needs child, opposing counsel relied on lies and distractions, but Rob stayed grounded in truth and integrity. He fought hard for what truly mattered without ever losing focus.
Beyond his skill, Rob genuinely cares. When I was losing confidence, he believed in me and helped me regain strength. His guidance lifted a huge weight off my shoulders so I could focus on caring for my child—something I’ll always be grateful for.
His team—Tracey and Ally—were equally dedicated, organized, and compassionate. They treated me like a person, not a case number, and worked tirelessly to protect my family’s best interests.
Rob Peterson and his team at Hanks & Peterson embody professionalism, courage, and compassion. They are true advocates—and to me, heroes.
I highly recommend David Hanks and his staff for anyone’s family legal needs! David and his paralegal Tauni were always very professional, detail oriented, and timely. David helped me settle my divorce in a very short amount of time, and I am so pleased with how the negotiations turned out. I could tell that David always had my best interests at heart as we interacted with my ex husband and his attorney. He was thorough and very knowledgeable in divorce law, and I am so pleased he was my attorney!
Tori made the process simple and easy on our ends. She did all the heavy lifting and communicated well through the process. I’d recommend Tori Camejo to anyone looking to get divorced!
David is an amazing human being, and I couldn’t have picked a better advocate during my stressful and emotional divorce. He was not only insanely thorough and took extra measures to make sure I was taken care of, but he also cared. He was empathetic, fought hard to protect what was important to me, and got me exactly what I needed to start my new life. Both David and Tauni were great at communicating, returning calls, taking care of all legal documents, and I never had to guess what was going on with my case. I know he will do his best to get you through this difficult time as quickly and efficiently as possible, and there’s no doubt he’ll make sure you get all you deserve.
I cannot say enough on behalf of David and Tauni. They were amazing and so helpful. Also, always made sure I was informed at every turn. I would not hesitate to have David handle any issues that I would need his advise and counsel.
I never thought that I would ever get an attorney. This is my first time and David was such a great assistant that helped going through my case. I would never know how my life would be if I don't get him as a attorney. He will be completely honest and transparent with all the legal advice and what comes with the causes or choices I made. During my case I told him that I don't have money (even now), however, he is still wanting to negotiate and do what he can to help. Literally for him what he stands for just "to help". I love how he is and the worked he have done, I would definitely recommend him as your representative. 10/10
I mediated a case with David Hanks today. He was prepared and helped his client to navigate the rough waters of divorce litigation. The parties were reasonable and a good outcome was reached.
I have so much gratitude for Hanks & Peterson. I met with several attorneys in my quest to find the best one for me and my case and immediately felt heard and understood upon meeting with Jim Hanks. Most importantly, I felt confident that he would be honest with me and not pursue anything he didn't feel confident we had a winning argument in, which sometimes can be hard to hear, but something I felt was important as I did not want to spend endless amounts of time and money in court. Jim retired and David took over my case and he did a fantastic job as well. He had the same ethics I sought out in Jim and the transition was smooth. Hanks and Peterson took care and consideration into the issues I was facing and made me feel that they had my best interest in mind. I always felt confident in their knowledge and abilities and it was calming to not have to worry about that aspect of my legal issues. They were also conscious of the money being spent and did what they could to keep them down if it was possible. It was always easy for me to keep in contact with them. My emails and calls were responded to in a timely manner and their paralegal, Tauni, took care of me as much as possible if the attorney wasn't immediately available. I'm thankful for all their hard work and what they were able to accomplish.
