I asked Cohen & Cohen for legal support for a sexual abuse case. I have a preponderance of evidence of abuse, including a recorded admittance from the perpetrator that he raped another woman. When I asked what kind of evidence would be considered acceptable, I was told they couldn’t say without a paid engagement — even though it was marketed as a free consultation. I was also told that email communication was confidential, which I later found out is not necessarily true. That’s a serious and misleading claim to make to someone sharing sensitive information. What’s most frustrating is that if they had just truly listened to me, they might have realized they actually had a case. Instead, I was talked at, interrupted, and overlooked. There was no genuine attempt to understand the details of what I was sharing, and that lack of care cost me time, energy, and emotional safety. I was also told the day prior that they could potentially look into whether the perpetrator could pay restitution damages via a trust fund — and then the very next day, that possibility was suddenly dismissed without explanation. I was told they don’t take sexual abuse cases at all — even though a different attorney at the same firm had told me the day before that they did. The inconsistency was frustrating, unprofessional, and disorienting. Many sexual abuse cases are won based on compelling testimony, supported by surrounding evidence. Pretending that only extreme, irrefutable proof like a video or documented confession is valid isn’t just unrealistic — it’s retraumatizing and dehumanizing. The entire experience left me feeling dismissed, invalidated, and invisible. If you’re a survivor seeking legal support, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
