I was facing charges that would have ruined my life permanently, as the law was not equipped to handle fringe factors. It was a felony and a misdemeanor. Other attorneys across the state assessed my odds as very slim, with mandatory time and other permanent consequences. They were all well-ranked and could handle the gravity of this case. Attorney Rumalla was also honest about my odds and wasn’t the most comforting person. However, he was realistic. Everyone else was focused on trying to comfort me, but Atty. Rumalla actually comforted me by letting me hear what I needed to hear. My conversations with him were crucial in helping me mentally prepare for the daunting task of advocating for my exoneration. Throughout the process, I received updates that frankly terrified me. My situation consumed me with the fear of not making it out. However, Attorney Rumalla was working diligently, and charges were dropped within a month. The kind of outcome for my charges was almost unheard of, with only a handful of cases with similar outcomes in the last decade. There is one singular truth that I had to accept immediately if you want to make it out of an impossible situation: You cannot trust institutions investigating you to assume your innocence alone. However, that reality doesn’t exist for everyone. You’ll need someone to help you navigate the hellish justice system. This exoneration didn’t resolve the other struggles I still face, nor is that Atty. Rumalla’s responsibility. But I still have a chance at life, free. I can’t emphasize enough that, regardless of my personal circumstances, an arrest without conviction makes it nearly impossible to secure a conviction, let alone incarceration. This allowed me to focus on myself, heal, and thrive. I never wish to be in this situation again, but if it happened to my loved ones, I’d call Bobby. I (still) fully trust him with my life.
