We hired Counts Law Firm to draft a response to a demand letter and were billed more than $6,000 for that single letter. We filed a complaint with the Bar over billing practices — the Bar did not find misconduct because of fine‑print language, but did agree we should not pay his final invoice, which we feel reflects that his billing structure was problematic.
He missed multiple deadlines, and we were billed for communications that existed solely because his deadlines were missed. We were billed for OUR phone calls to his office asking whether deadlines had been missed. A draft was prepared that took a direction we did not authorize, and when we pointed this out, we were charged additional hours for what were essentially minor edits.
His “free consultation” was billed beyond 30 minutes without prior notice. Tasks that took minutes were billed in 15‑minute increments at a high hourly rate. After we terminated his services, a new attorney completed the same work, litigated the matter, and won — for less than Counts billed for that one letter.
We did not find his billing transparent or his service satisfactory, and we do not recommend his services based on our experience.
Owner response
We respectfully disagree with this characterization. Our billing practices were reviewed by the State Bar and found compliant with applicable rules, and all work performed was documented and communicated. While we regret that this client was dissatisfied, we stand by the quality, transparency, and professionalism of our services, and we wish them the best moving forward.
The team at Counts Law firm has been my resource for legal advice and matters for years and I will continue to rely on them. I appreciate all their hard work

Counts Law Firm helped many of my clients and personal friends with issues about child visitation, general family law, and other business matters pertaining to their legal obligations. Emahn, as an attorney and individual, is professional, kind and caring. He ensures that you are presented with all your options and understand the possible outcomes. The staff at his office that I've talked to and followed up with were all knowledgeable, kind and considerate. I am very pleased with the services offered and would recommend this law firm to all my friends and family.
Owner response
Thank you for your thoughtful review and for trusting us with the people you care about. We’re honored by your confidence and are glad our team could provide clear guidance and compassionate support.
This guy right here, Mr. Counts, brings a level of confidence and steadiness that immediately puts you at ease. He’s firm, persistent, and does not back down when dealing with the opposing party. Knowing he was handling things allowed me to focus on life instead of stress. Highly recommend Counts Law Firm.

Counts Law Firm provided exceptional service from start to finish. The team was professional, responsive, and truly cared about my case. They explained everything clearly and kept me informed every step of the way. I highly recommend Counts Law Firm to anyone needing reliable, organized, and attentive legal representation.
Owner response
Thank you for your wonderful feedback. We’re glad our communication and care made a positive difference, and we appreciate your trust and recommendation.
UPDATED review because they want to reply and make this a "system" issue not an accountability issue on how they treated a new client poorly. What they responded shares the process- what their not addressing correctly was the order of how things happened- the assistant never got back to me with a new time that worked and I asked multiple times. She just kept pushing for documents. I hate to have to do this but I don't appreciate a response that doesn't even address the elephant in the room- poor customer service.
I never even got a chance to speak with the attorney because his assistant is really unprofessional. Aminah kept demanding me to upload documents and answer questions saying " I didn't make the deadline" when I didn't even have a confirmed appointment on the calendar. I asked to to reschedule my appointment the same day and she kept calling me and emailing me saying verbadem "You were given a deadline when you already had your original consultation scheduled and never adhered to it." This isn't how you talk to prospects and it doesn't even make sense to expect anything when you can't even coordinate an appointment.
Waste of time.
Owner response
Hi Heather, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry that your experience felt frustrating, as that is never our intention.

To provide context, you initially had a consultation scheduled and shortly after requested to reschedule. Our team responded with new available options, including the appointment date you preferred. That time slot was still open when the message was sent, but it was filled before we received confirmation from you. We understand how disappointing that can be.

As part of our standard process, we ask for certain background information and documents before finalizing a consultation. While we understand these requests can feel extensive, they are an important part of how we operate. Providing this information allows the Attorney to thoroughly review your matter beforehand, which keeps the consultation focused on strategy rather than catching up on basic details, and helps you leave the meeting with a clear, actionable plan whether you retain with us or not. We are also reviewing our internal processes to ensure that communication remains clear, timely, and aligned with client expectations moving forward.

We were eager to meet you, and at no point would we ever deny you the opportunity to meet with the attorney. We understand that our system did not align with your preferences and sincerely wish you the best moving forward.
Very unethical firm. Horrible experience as a client. Attorney Counts has several posted interactions with the state bar. Do your research and thoroughly check every bill!
Owner response
We’re sorry to hear about your experience. However, this review does not accurately reflect the facts. Our firm provided the legal services requested, and when the invoice went unpaid, we were compelled to take legal action to recover the balance due. The reviewer filed a counterclaim alleging unfair billing, which the court rejected. The court ultimately ordered the reviewer to pay our firm’s outstanding invoice in full, confirming the legitimacy of our billing and services.
We take billing transparency and client satisfaction seriously and always encourage open communication about fees and expectations throughout representation.
