Our 17-year-old son was drinking with a friend and passed out in his car, which was parked on the street in front of his friend’s house. He was woken up by the police and charged with an adult DUI, and the case was assigned to an adult court. I researched the consequences of the charges and realized that the fines would be in the thousands of dollars with a mandatory minimum of ten days in jail. Worst of all, the charges would stay on his record permanently, even though he was a minor. At that point, I realized we needed professional legal help. I called several attorneys and, thankfully, happened to call Sonja’s office. Within a few minutes of speaking with her, I realized she wasn’t looking at our situation as a potential payday (like some of the other attorneys I spoke with), but as a chance to really help a young kid out. It was clear that she’d give the best effort she possibly could to represent our son and that she had the smarts and experience needed to get the best possible outcome. Firstly, she was able to get our case heard in juvenile court instead of adult court. That immediately made a huge difference in the potential outcome because adult courts are focused on punishment, whereas juvenile courts are focused on rehabilitation. Secondly, there were all kinds of “small” actions she took to best position our son’s case in juvenile court. An attorney could choose not to do any of this extra work and you’d never know, because most people don’t know the ins and outs of how the court works. But Sonja does all the extra stuff that can help with a favorable judgment. In the end, Sonja got our son’s charges reduced from an adult DUI to Minor in Consumption (MIC). An MIC is the same charge a kid would get if they had one sip of alcohol and were caught by the police. The fine was $75. He has to take a couple of classes, there is no probation, and the rest of the consequences were the statutory minimum. Most importantly, everything will be expunged from his record when he turns 18. As parents, we wanted him to feel the pain of the legal consequences to scare him into making better choices. But we didn’t want him dealing with the consequences of a teenage mistake 20 years down the road. With Sonja’s expert guidance, we achieved the best possible outcome in our son’s case.
