I retained Christopher Morales to represent my 20-year-old son in a criminal case while he was still in custody. Because my son asked me to help him understand his options, I reached out to counsel seeking clarification about a plea offer that had been presented and a Young Adult Program that was described as the recommended resolution. Unfortunately, the program and the implications of the plea were never clearly explained. Instead, program materials were emailed without much discussion. When I followed up with questions so my son could better understand the decision he was being asked to make, the interaction became adversarial. During the conversation I was told that I was interfering with the attorney-client relationship, even though I had not attended court hearings and was only asking questions at my son’s request so he could make an informed decision. The tone of the conversation became hostile and included accusations that I found both surprising and unnecessary. Criminal cases are incredibly stressful for families, especially when a young person is facing serious charges. In those situations, clear and respectful communication is extremely important. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here. I would strongly encourage anyone considering this firm to have a very clear conversation at the outset about communication expectations and how questions will be handled.
