To clarify: I did not mistake this firm for a public defender’s office, nor was I asking for free representation. I asked for a general cost estimate for the service I needed. I was told no estimate could be given and that I would receive a bill after services were rendered. When I asked what would happen if I couldn’t afford the final amount, I was told the matter would go to collections. I believe clients should be able to understand potential costs before agreeing to services.

Edit: this was a five star review but knowing what I do now, I can’t not say something. I was arrested in 2022 for possession charges. I told Mr. Payne a brief overview of what happened and he accepted my case after a $5k retainer fee. I got another bill for $5k a few weeks after. I didn’t hear anything from them for close to a year but figured no news is good news. Finally I get a call explaining that he struck a deal with DA and made it seem like I was lucky to not be going to prison for a few years and he was the reason for it. In lieu of prison time I would be on a year probation plus community service. Seven months into my year, it was time to go on harvest and informed my P.O that I would not be there that month and I thought we were in agreement which was not the case. I got another warrant for my arrest and was informed by Tray Payne that they were dropping me as a client. I was contacted by the court appointed attorney who said she would be taking care of everything and within one month got a call back from her saying that she got all charges dismissed for lack of evidence and the mishandling of evidence and that the officers were fired not long after my arrest for the way they handled my case with prejudice. Which is what I tried to tell Tray in the first place, but I don’t think he believed me. I think he was just able to strike a deal without even looking at any of the evidence or lack there of.. so now I have felonies on my record and have trouble finding jobs because of his complacency and lack of care for his clients wellbeing.
